Boris and Natasha
by T J Therien
If life was distilled in nursery rhyme
I would be the Boris to your Natasha
You would be my partner in life and crime
Playing house as Sultana and Pasha
After overthrowing Maharaja
Dancing to orchestrated arrangements
Attending extravagant engagements
Incognito in your wig and my toupee
Rocky and Bullwinkle are CIA agents
And Mickey Mouse works for the NSA

In Captivity
by T J Therien
Memories of majestic forests dense
Echoed in every fiber of being
Innately engrained instinctive sense
Caged and desperately in need of freeing
Predisposed for fighting and fleeing
Condemned to die in a concrete lair
Tethered to a pole, pacing here and there
A pitiful creature with worn thin fur
Removed from nature the circus bear
Exhibits abnormal behaviour

The Playground
by T J Therien
Do we build people up to tear them down?
Are we kids playing king of the castle?
Fighting over a paper-mâché crown
A game of liege lord, rascal and vassal
Engaged in subterfuge and feelings facile
Stepping on others to climb up the hill
When artifice does not ambition fulfill
We do whatever it takes to stay on top
In a corrupted version of Jack and Jill
And kindergarten games that never stop

A Different Kind of Zombie Apocalypse
by T J Therien
Under the influence of anesthesia
The psyche of society has grown numb
Suffering from collective amnesia
Reduced to a rudimentary sum
Destined for an undesirable outcome
Unplugged by an electronic tether
To a disconnected sense of together
Synapse misfires in the maladjusted mind
As it floats about in the digital aether
Of communal consciousness undefined

A hitchhiker sits on the side of the road
Massaging the blisters on his feet
Lamenting the life he thought he was owed
As newspaper tumbleweeds blow down the street
Destined to litter gardens of concrete
Flotsam in the gutter that runs by the walk
Clogs up the sewer grate on the next block
Backed up, the sewage has nowhere to flow
Trying to find nutrient in chafe and stalk
There he sat in his stench with nowhere to go

Reciting words with reverie
Suckling the teat of wet nurse
Among the rabble and revelry
The poet writes in uni-verse,
With sole ambition to immerse
The gentle reader in fluid feeling
That encourages cathartic healing,
Imaginative invention, idea profound
In the mind expanded without ceiling
And in the silence of the soul resound

The Pillar of Faith
by T J Therien

Trying to cipher purpose and meaning
From every experience, hurt and heartache
In each of life’s lessons gleaning
What can only be learned by mistake
What can only be taught when unlearned
It’s a colloquial paradox
In spite of all the knowledge earned
The keys held don’t fit the locks
The doors opened go no-where
The mind devolves into confusion
So to avoid nihilistic despair
We fabricate and foster an illusion

February 14 197 AD, the Very First Valentine

In the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin,
A weathered skull canonized, wreathed with a crown of fresh cut flowers,
Of Terni lay the relic of the venerated Valentin,
Beneath an almond tree, by his grave, Julia would pass the hours,
She would unfold and read the little heart shaped scrap of parchment,
A testament of love she kept in her bodice next to her breast,
The night before his execution, he penned heart felt sentiment,
That was hand delivered by a sympathetic Asterius,
Having been cured of her loss of sight Julia could read the note,
And for this she was ever indebted, falling deeply in love
Her heart would swell, upon each syllable she would silently dote,
While upon a branch, among the pink blossoms there perched a white dove,
She would read and reread, read again and reread each line divine,
Until she arrived at those final words…”Always, Your Valentine”
