The Crux
by T J Therien
Humanity stands at a crucial junction
In the roundhouse of the impending
To escape this nexus of dysfunction
The entire apple cart needs upending
Without cutting off the hand offending
We need to break free from this strangle-hold
Dispel the illusion of wealth and gold
Give up this addiction to self-extreme
It won’t be easy, if the truth be told
It will take much more than a viral meme

Getting Old
by T J Therien

And so another morning breaks
Another day Time will whittle
Every joint in the body aches
There’s no reprise, no acquittal
The skin thins and bone grows brittle
Arteries clog, the breath shallows
On the slow march to the gallows
On the turning of dusty page
The sun sets on dusky hallows
Everyone must acquiesce to age

Dog Eat Dog
by T J Therien

Sinister capitalistic cabals
Have introduced their greatest creation
Socio-economic cannibals
Boiling down the human population
In the briny broth of exploitation
The caldron bubbles, they will eat you whole
The Devil cackles as you sell your soul
The consequence, greater than realized
Having crossed that bridge, having paid that toll
You’ve been indoctrinated and desensitized

Boris and Natasha
by T J Therien

If life was distilled in nursery rhyme
I would be the Boris to your Natasha
You would be my partner in life and crime
Playing house as Sultana and Pasha
After overthrowing Maharaja
Dancing to orchestrated arrangements
Attending extravagant engagements
Incognito in your wig and my toupee
Rocky and Bullwinkle are CIA agents
And Mickey Mouse works for the NSA

The Playground
by T J Therien

Do we build people up to tear them down?
Are we kids playing king of the castle?
Fighting over a paper-mâché crown
A game of liege lord, rascal and vassal
Engaged in subterfuge and feelings facile
Stepping on others to climb up the hill
When artifice does not ambition fulfill
We do whatever it takes to stay on top
In a corrupted version of Jack and Jill
And kindergarten games that never stop

Reverberations
by T J Therien

Reciting words with reverie
Suckling the teat of wet nurse
Among the rabble and revelry
The poet writes in uni-verse,
With sole ambition to immerse
The gentle reader in fluid feeling
That encourages cathartic healing,
Imaginative invention, idea profound
In the mind expanded without ceiling
And in the silence of the soul resound

The Pillar of Faith
by T J Therien

Trying to cipher purpose and meaning
From every experience, hurt and heartache
In each of life’s lessons gleaning
What can only be learned by mistake
What can only be taught when unlearned
It’s a colloquial paradox
In spite of all the knowledge earned
The keys held don’t fit the locks
The doors opened go no-where
The mind devolves into confusion
So to avoid nihilistic despair
We fabricate and foster an illusion

Would That I Could

(While co-facilitating a creative writing day for the Toronto Writers Collective on Tuesday I wrote this in ten minutes to the prompt of “I would if I could.”)

Would that I could heal the sick and feed the poor

I would do this much and so much more

I would write right the world’s wrongs

Create a better place existing beyond verse and songs

And teach Humanity love is at the core

We can do so much better, so much more

Than waste our time on senseless war

This is what my heart really longs

Would that I could

I would deconstruct the myths and lore

Make poverty and illness a thing of yore

Pass the pipe and fire up the bongs

Pull from the forge of my mind with iron wrought tongs

A world that is worth fighting for

Would that I could
