On Differing Views

I know many people don’t share my views and that is okay. I don’t expect anyone to think like I think. I do hope to make people think whether they agree with me or not and that is really my only purpose. I know many people who have expressed views counter to mine and have expressed them rationally and thoughtfully and those views are every bit as valid as my own and they force me to walk through my own argument for why I think the way I do. I know seldom such debates will change minds, but if we are at least in part open-minded we can better understand each other on that sliver of ground where there is difference between people, because in almost every other regard people are the same.

Damn It

I think of the economy as a great river that has been dammed. On one side, the one percent and on the other side the rest of us. The dam was built to control the flow of wealth, with the one percent monopolizing the river and the reservoir and the rest of us reliant on the trickle that flows downstream from the obstruction that prevents everyone from benefiting from the river’s bounty. Thing is, if you blow up the dam a lot of people will be wiped out because everyone has built their life in its shadow.

A Thousand Wasted Opportunities

Humanity has been given a thousand opportunities to redeem itself and a thousand times it has disappointed. We could be so much more, but we are long on promise and short on delivery. It’s just not possible to have grand vision and be so short sighted. History tells us how repeating the same mistakes will end and yet we are all too ready to accept the insanity of the status quo. All we need to do is open our eyes, but we continue to ignore the obvious. How many opportunities does Humanity have left before it is too late and there is no redemption, only ruin.

On Nobility and Honor

People are not born Noble. Nobility is earned by leading an honorable life and Honor is doing the right thing regardless of consequence to self. One cannot be Noble without Honor and Honor is earned. Honor is not fancy words or titles. Honor is the way we behave; we either behave with it, or without it. It is that simple and to act with Honor is to be Noble regardless your station in life.

Garfunkel-ed again; More thoughts on Art

If we accept that Art imitates Nature, then when attempting to define Art, we must be sure of the intention of the Artist. Was the work created with care of forethought? Or was it whimsically produced by pulling it out of their ass? We can accept that Nature is random, but imitation only occurs with painstakingly deliberate intent. There is nothing accidental about it. If something is Art, the Artist should be able to state the intention of the work from the conceptual stage of the project and should be able to answer what effect the piece is supposed to achieve long before eyes see it or ears hear it. Art may be subjective but it is not arbitrary.
