A White Man’s Burden

(I wanted to write something for Black History Month and that got me to thinking…)

I sometimes wonder if I am a closet racist

Full of pride and prejudice

Beneath the layers of political correctness…

I sometimes wonder if the ideals of equality I espouse

Is over-compensation

For something much deeper and darker…

I sometimes wonder if this nagging guilt

Is the product of denying my truth

That I am white privilege…

I sometimes wonder…

This is just how FUCKED UP our society is!

Snapshot_20150218_1Ben Levin, former deputy education minister (Ontario) who has been charged with 7 child pornography related offences has agreed to a deal that will see him plead guilty to three child porn charges. He is asking for support in the form of letters of reference which he hopes will land him a lighter sentence. This is sickening! What is worst is he will probably receive more support in his bid to stay out of jail than I will in my bid to be the next Poet Laureate of Toronto. This sick bastard has the nerve to ask for support for his sinister behaviour. I’m asking for support for an honest endeavor. Those who watch child pornography create the demand that causes irreparable harm to our children. As far as I’m concerned viewing child pornography is the same as engaging in pedophilia! We Need Accountability

Recently in Canada Railway workers went on strike. The primary concerns were not money, but safety concerns regarding shift length and rest periods. The sides recently agreed to resolve the issues through mediation, but this only came after the Federal Government threatened back to work legislation. Back to work legislation is only supposed to be used for essential services. I do not see Railway Workers as an essential service because there are other modes of transport. The government wanting to legislate Railway Workers back to work regardless of the safety concerns raised by the union I find hypercritical especially given the tragedy of Lac Megantic, Quebec. The Federal Government passed legislation that does nothing to improve rail safety as companies do not need to declare potentially hazardous materials to towns through which the cargo will pass until after it has passed whereas prior to the accident they did not have to declare it at all.

All of this only goes to reinforce one theme. The Government does not care about public safety when it is a matter of the Economy. Our Government is quite willing to risk the lives of average Canadians to keep Economic Prosperity of the ultra-elite intact. This is just further proof that Government serves the interests of Business and not the interests of the people that elect them. In today’s society companies have more rights than individuals. Business share the same rights granted to the populace, yet do not have the consequence of repercussions Criminal Charges where there is loss of life, or harm done due to negligence. This is not how government is supposed to work. Or maybe it is how it’s supposed to work and we’ve been duped into believing differently.

I think we need laws that will make politicians and CEO’s culpable for endangering the lives of people that result in Criminal Charges being laid and lengthy prison times imposed. If companies enjoy the rights of an individual they should also face the same consequences as the individual when there is negligence on the part of the company that has cost human lives. For example, if Back to Work Legislation was passed in the case of Railway Workers in light of their safety concerns and another Lac Megantic type tragedy were to occur. The CEO of CN/CP, the Labour Minister, the Minister of Health and Safety and the Prime Minister should all be charged under the criminal code for what essentially is Murder in the First Degree and at the very least Wreckless Endangerment. Either way, Governments and Companies need to be held accountable.

The Damaging Effects of Language

Can we please stop using the terms “Radical Islam” and “Islamic Extremists?” We do not use the terms “Radical Christian” or “Christian Extremist” to describe the Klan, or the bible thumping south that believe the world is only 6000 years old and don’t believe Global Warming is real. Did we call those in Waco Texas Extreme Christians. No we didn’t. We called it a cult. We don’t use the terms “Radical Judaism” or “Jewish Extremists” to describe Zionists that want expand settlements into Palestinian land and redefine the borders of Israel to reflect those borders laid out in scripture and willing to enforce it with the gun. It’s simple; none of these groups are the standard bearer of their Religions and each of these groups go against what is at any Religions core, which is Love. Let’s just drop all Religious connotations and call them what they are, criminals and murderers.

Adding a Religious connotation to Radical, or Extremist only reinforces the idea that all that follow the religion being extremist and radical. I also consider it Hate Speech, just as I do the caricatures depicting the Muslim Religion and Mohammed. Think back to WWII Germany and the caricatures that depicted those of Jewish Faith in an unsavory light. There is no difference other than the Religion. They are equally distasteful and disgusting today as they were in the years leading up to the War and they do not deserve the protection of Freedom of Expression.

There are good and bad people of all Faiths and walks of life and the bad are not representative of the Faith, or group. We are all flesh and blood, we all have feelings and we all have our beliefs, we are all Human and in each of us is the capacity of Good and Evil. Let’s focus on what is Good about ourselves and others. Let’s focus on our similarities rather than our differences. Whether religious or not, let’s focus on what the true message of these doctrines are, which is Love, Tolerance, Acceptance and Charity.

For the record, I am agnostic and a follower of no Faith.
